Meaning of Work as a Whole

Oryx and Crake has many takeaways. Atwood is known to include allusions throughout her novels. They are often events in our world that happen, but we see it as something that is just a part of history. If we took a step back, these events are kind of crazy and dystopian in itself.

Some of these takeaways include; you may never totally know someone, they could have some big secrets, the world will probably end badly if big corporations get too much power and overtake people, and the government can become extremely controlling because of power and money.

Of course many people have big secrets that could effect everyone,  but we don't see that everyday. Crake and Jimmy were best friends and Jimmy never knew that Crake would make a whole new species to preserve a part of the human race.

As humans we can deceive people quite easily if we really want to. People also lie if they think it will protect others. It is all part our instincts for "survival".

Another idea that I took away from this novel is that big corporations can be very harmful to a society. In the book companies like Corpsecorps and OrganIcs are constantly brought up. They own so much in the society. One of the companies bought out a coffee company so that there is only one brand of coffee.

We see this happening in our own lives and learn about it in history class. Monopoly can be very dangerous, especially in regards to wealth among citizens. Right now it's happening in front of our eyes.

Amazon is a great example. It started as a small company, but as the internet grew and our society changed it has become a major company and a place where many families including my own can get anything from sheets to a mannequin. Basically anything you need.

Now Amazon owns Whole Foods which was once just a grocery store. You can get your food delivered to you that day. The fast changing world can be dangerous and at some point may have a great downfall like the world that Oryx and Crake takes place in.

Finally, the governments control over its people. In Jimmy's version of the world the big corporations I talked about before were controlling many aspects of everyones life. They basically became the government.

People don't like when the government has control over peoples daily life. In the U.S. we tend to think we are pretty free, which we are compared to some other countries. For example in China the internet is extremely censored and they are unable to access lots of information. This is harmful to the citizens because they don't have a right to information.

There are so many different takeaways from this novel and Atwood does a great job using real life problems and making them seem so crazy in the novel. Some of the big themes include government control, dangers of big businesses and technological advancements, and the secrets that anyone can hide. When we read novels like this we can think about all the mistakes we have made in our own lives and take into perspective the harmfulness of them.
